PEPI-G: Program to Empower Partnership with Industry and Government
PEPI-G Program 2020 | Applications Open March 1 - April 1
The Program to Empower Partnerships with Industry and Government (PEPI-G) supports data faculty members, research scientists, postdocs, and graduate and undergraduate students from across the country in working on high level problems for the federal government. PEPI-G fellows will work with our 2020 partner, DHS-ARPA, using data science to fight human trafficking, discover best practices for IoT analytics that inform human decision making, or on other relevant projects Fellows may propose. Fellowships with DHS-ARPA will last 3, 4, 5, 6 months beginning either in the summer or the fall based on approval. iCompBio REU and Workshop Provides Training to Students and Faculty
In the week of July 29-Aug 2, 2019, more than 50 faculty and students from more 21 institutions participated in two R bootcamps at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC). The iCompBio REU is supported by NSF Award 1852042, REU Site: ICompBio – Engaging Undergraduates in Interdisciplinary Computing for Biological Research. The first bootcamp on data wrangling using R was taught by Hong Qin, a computational biologist at UTC. Materials for this R Data Wrangling bootcamp is available at a public GitHub repository https://tinyurl.com/UTC-R-camps2019. The second bootcamp, Electronic Health Records, was taught by Elvena Fong and Zhuqi Miao from the Center for Health Systems Innovation at the Oklahoma State University. 2019 PEPI-G Fellows Selected
Two fellows were selected for the 2019 cycle of the PEPI-G Program. The Program to Empower Partnerships with Industry and Government (PEPI-G) supports faculty members, research scientists, postdocs, and graduate and undergraduate students (rising juniors and seniors as of 2019) from the 16 states that comprise the South Hub. South Big Data Hub Recognized for Expanding Georgia Tech Research Portfolio and Platform
Georgia Tech’s Office of the Executive Vice President for Research (EVPR) awarded the South Big Data Regional Innovation Hub (SBDH) the Outstanding Achievement in Research Program Development Award for 2019. The annual award is presented to a research team for efforts that create a new thought leadership platform that significantly expands Georgia Tech’s research portfolio. As part of the DataUp program, University of Puerto Rico- Rio Piedras (UPRRP) held 35 learners on August 18. Learners gained valuable skills beneficial to the development of their current and future research while UPRRP witnessed the institutional interest regarding data science and genomics. On September 28 – 29, the DataUp program hosted a 2-day workshop at Texas A&M University – Kingsville, a historically Hispanic serving institution in Southern Texas. No matter the level of coding expertise, each learner noted how the workshop and the utilization of JupyterHub will benefit their future research and project opportunities. As part of the DataUp program,Johnson C. Smith University held a workshop on Oct 18-19, 2018 to introduce shell, git, R, Matlab and the JupyterHub. The learners from both the humanities and natural sciences began to think about how an interactive notebook could benefit their disciplines and create collaborative projects on their campus. As part of the DataUp program, Old Dominion University held a workshop on Oct 25-26 to introduce shell, git, R, and the JupyterHub. More than 20 students and faculty joined to engage in this 2-day workshop. NSF Invests $4 Million in Big Data for Southern United States
Precision medicine and understanding health disparities, innovation to power competitive manufacturing, technology for smarter communities, and addressing coastal hazards such as hurricanes are among the challenges facing the Southern United States. A $4 million award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) will help apply data science and engineering to address those challenges.
