South Big Data Hub links talented students with tech startups through DataStart program
DataStart provides real-world experiences for students while helping entrepreneurial companies
Graduate students from six universities in the southern U.S. will spend the summer working on data challenges important to the success of new and growing technology companies thanks to a program called the Southern Startup Internship Program in Data Science (DataStart).
DataStart interns will address a wide range of data-related business problems, including spotting trends in the diversity of people included in clinical trials, developing methods for using sensor data to detect loads on wind turbines, and the challenges of cleansing and standardizing data to extract more knowledge from it.

South Hub Sponsors Data Science for Social Good Summer Program 2017
The Data Science for Social Good- Atlanta (DSSG-ATL) program brought together nine graduate students from various southern states to participate in a ten-week paid internship experience. The program has engaged student interns with diverse academic backgrounds including computer science, statistics, digital media, public policy, civil engineering, industrial engineering and urban planning, as well as diverse demographic backgrounds including underrepresented groups. New Report Looks at Strategies for Building a Data Economy
The report, NC in the Next Tech Tsumani: Navigating the Data Economy, says North Carolina has the raw assets to build a world-class data economy, including top-tier universities and thriving business sectors in technology, life sciences and finance. Data science is not just for technology companies either, according to the report. In North Carolina companies as varied as R. J. Reynolds Tobacco, Norfolk Southern Railroad, and General Electric use data for insights into customers, products, and operations. BREAKING: DataUp – Keeping Data Science Broad Recipients Announced
The 2018 DataUp program includes seven institutions from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), and other minority-serving institutions (MSIs), community colleges, and primarily teaching-focused institutions. Institutions will receive a 2-day data science workshop on their respective campuses and travel funding for an in-person ‘train-the-trainers’ workshop in Atlanta, GA to prepare teams to teach regional data science workshops.
