PyData Carolinas offers tools and tips for bioinformatics research

PyData Carolinas 2016 brought together hundreds of professionals, researchers and students interested in data analysis to discuss how best to apply Python tools to meet challenges in data management, processing, analytics and visualization. Among the attendees was Clarence White, one of two students from North Carolina A & T who was sponsored by the South Big Data Hub to attend. The Hub was also a silver sponsor of PyData Carolinas. Data Science and Emerging Economies: Students Attend #YCBS2018

The South Hub awarded five student's registration fellowships through the SNAP-DS program, “Stimulating New Activities and Projects in Data Science,” to attend the Young CEOs Business Summit's (YCBS) 2018 Annual Summit in Atlanta, that expose students to data science and the ways data science can better societies and businesses. Students quickly became aware of big data and ways big data can impact emerging markets in Africa.

Hackathon in Rocket City (Huntsville, AL) focuses on flood management

CLOSED - - A hackathon sponsored by the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) and the city of Huntsville, AL. The hackathon, to be held Feb. 25 and 26, will give software developers, policymakers, public safety officials, business leaders, and other creative problem solvers the chance to make a difference in how communities prepare for and respond to dangerous floods.

Hackathon part of effort to make Orlando the ‘Smartest City’

On August 26 and 27, programmers and software engineers convened in Orlando to push the boundaries of creativity, innovation, reality, and technology to build solutions and concepts that have the potential to make a difference in the Orlando community. Called the Orlando Smart Cities Hackathon, the event aimed to support the city of Orlando in its efforts to become a smart city and also to demonstrate the city’s capabilities as it works to earn the title of “The Smartest City.” Orlando received two smart cities grant awards and is pursuing a variety of additional funding opportunities for smart cities initiatives that would help to enhance transportation citywide and beyond. In these pursuits, the city continues to move forward with building a data-driven infrastructure that will support safer, cleaner, and more efficient travel and an improved quality of life.

BREAKING: DataUp – Keeping Data Science Broad Recipients Announced

The 2018 DataUp program includes seven institutions from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), and other minority-serving institutions (MSIs), community colleges, and primarily teaching-focused institutions. Institutions will receive a 2-day data science workshop on their respective campuses and travel funding for an in-person ‘train-the-trainers’ workshop in Atlanta, GA to prepare teams to teach regional data science workshops.

Gear Up for StatFest 2018 with Testimonials from StatFest 2017 Student Attendees

he South Big Data Innovation Hub sponsored five graduate students for a panel at the undergraduate conference “StatFest”, which is a one day conference aimed at encouraging undergraduate students from historically underrepresented groups (African American, Hispanic, Native Americans) to consider careers and graduate studies in the statistical and data sciences. Students participated as panelists for the 2017 StatFest held at Emory University to share their experiences of being a statistics major, and as a minority or persons of color in the field, to encourage undergraduate students to enter the statistics field.

The Internet-of-Things for Smart and Connected Cities and Campuses

The purpose of this workshop is to collect practitioner input into the challenges surrounding the use of data coming from distributed sensors in the context of smart cities and smart campuses.

NSF BIGDATA and BDHubs Joint PI Meeting: a student’s perspective
